The coin is intended to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the first contact with Timor.
The reverse of the coin depicts a 16th-century Portuguese ship representing the arrival from Portugal to the island, below it, the thatched roof of a local resident's house. TIMOR 2015 is engraved on the left side of the coin, 1515 PORTUGAL on the right. At the bottom is the signature of the artist Fernando Fonseca.
